In India, ration cards are primarily used when purchasing subsidized foodstuffs (wheat and rice) and fuel (LPG and kerosene). The cards have been used since World War II and their use continues in the 21st century. They are an important subsistence tool for the poor, provide proof of identity and a connection with government databases. India's public distribution system (PDS) is based on the ration card, which it uses to establish identity, eligibility, and entitlement.


TYPES OD RATION CARDS

Two versions of the ration card exist; the A4 folded paper card and a plastic card embedded with an integrated circuit (IC). Both versions bear a photograph of the head of the bearer's family. One card per family is issued by the state government. Three categories of card are issued: extreme poverty level (Antyodaya), below poverty line (BPL), and above poverty line (APL). The poverty lines are regularly defined by the Planning Commission of India based on data collection and analysis from various sources.




A ration card is considered to be a vital document for Indian citizens. It is often used as an identification proof while applying for several other documents like Domicile Certificate, entry of name in Electoral Rolls, etc. The Karnataka Department of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs started the process for registration of ration card through online application from 15th January, 2013 onwards.

  2. You will receive a token number and a security code on your mobile phone
  3. Find out a valid ration card holder who would act as your introducer
  4. Your family members will be needed for biometric fingerprint scans and photographs
  5. Open your online ration card application in the presence of your introducer
  6. Provide the details of your family members as required in the online application form
  7. Upload the photographs and biometrics of your family members and yourself
  8. Your recent electricity bill, photo proof ID and address proof should be scanned from the original copies and uploaded at the photo biometric-center
  9. Your introducer must also carry his or her original ration card and recent electricity bill while accompanying you to the photo biometric-center
  10. Download the self-declaration and sign it
  11. Scan the declaration and upload the document online.
  12. You will receive a printed acknowledgement of your application from the photo and biometric service centre.

ELIGIBLE FOR PINK CARD  / WHITE RATION CARD  ?
(FOR FAMILIES OF ANNUAL INCOME OVER 1 LAKSH,NO ENTITLED FOR FOOD RSTIONS)
 Pink card is for every one nad white card as some restrictions as well  , who are just above the poverty line and having the decent income like working in an Private company or any government sector .This people will get the pink ration card / white ration card . Having pink card doesn’t mean that you are eligible for all type of benefits form government . Frankly speaking that rashan will only represent your represent id card only 



DUTIES OF CARDHOLDERS

1. Ration Card should be kept in safe custody and in no case this should be given to any other person/PDS holder.
2. While drawing ration, the cardholder must check the quality/quantity and weighing of the commodity and he must ensure the receipt of cash memo along with proper entries of the same made in the ration card.
3. In case of loss/damage of the ration card /change/addition/deletion in the entries of the ration card, the cards holder shall immediately contact the concerned circle office. No over writing /alteration in their card should be done by the cardholders.
4. In the event of death and migration of any family member out of the state for specified period the name of the person should be deleted from the ration card
